Somers Insurance Celebrates Over 60 Years
For over 60 years Somers Insurance Agency, Inc. has been in operation in Lindsay, OK. Charlie Somers started Somers Insurance Agency in 1954.
In the years prior to starting his business, Charlie had acquired a good deal of oil field related insurance knowledge while he was a field representative for two different insurance companies that wrote oil field related business. While regularly calling independent insurance agents here in Lindsay, Charlie developed an appreciation for the town and its people and realized that the experience he had acquired would be beneficial if he were to strike out on his own.
So, he borrowed $1,500 from a friend near his hometown in Tonganoxie, Kansas and bought a manual Underwood typewriter (which is still in the office) and opened shop.
He went door to door in the summer of 1954, introducing himself to residences and business in Lindsay and quickly gained a reputation as a knowledgeable and very personable young man. In about 1956, he moved to 112 S. Main Street where they are still located.
Charlie’s son, Mike, joined him in the business March 1st, 1977 and purchased the agency from his dad December 1st, 1985.
December 10th, 2007 Mike’s son, Daniel joined his father in the insurance profession. Somers Insurance Agency, Inc. is continuing to provide commercial insurance for various industries.
